Robbie goes to Samoa
Submitted by juliaparker on 29 October 2009 - 12:09pmFollowing the Tsunami in Samoa on the 7th October, Robbie flew off to join a team from YWAM Rescuenet on the 9th.
He joined a team of 8, some from NZ & some from Aussie.
As one of the first NGO organisations there, and with the help of YWAM Samoa, they were able to get to remote places and provide first aid for many victims.
Most had abrasions that were infected and needed treatment. Most significantly for this team was the hope they were able to bring, though. Everyone had lost family or friends, some had lost children or grandchildren.
This medical team had the edge where they not only treated the physical wounds, they were able to pray for the people as well, and speak hope and purpose into their lives.
Conditions, he reports, were pretty grim. The survivors headed for the hills after the wave hit, but there is little sanitation or fresh water available, let alone suitable shelter.
As aid poured in, tarpaulins and some tents were delivered, and their attention turned from medical care to helping with clearing land so that the people have somewhere to live.
After 2 weeks the team returned home, having done a great deal, but knowing that there will be needs there for many months -if not years - to come.
October
Submitted by editor on 1 October 2009 - 1:44pmOur base ministries are on a steady rise as we pioneer some new focuses. Lisa and Justin, two staff members here have started to work alongside people in the local home for the elderly, casually visiting people there and attending a Sunday church service every other week. Matt has continued to run a local youth group which is also growing steadily, last week the youth held a ‘game show’ which got very messy and very smelly very quickly! After the destruction ended the DTS shared on what it really means to follow God!
The fifth week of the DTS is now here and the topic is relationships! Not just romantic ;) but every day relationships with others, what are our personality types, how do we work best with others, what is our part to play in this world of work? Kim Williamson is speaking to us in all these areas and more. As another week roles by its encouraging seeing people going deeper, getting real and making the most out of their time here, learning and soaking up everything!
